Losing Yourself | Student Short Film

Role: Writer, Director, Producer, Cinematographer, Editor

Original objectives

For my first student project, I created a short film of about two minutes based on the theme of identity. The story follows a university student who struggles to understand who he is after experiencing strange and unsettling events. The film uses visual storytelling with no dialogue, making the experience more open and universal for the audience.

Development process

Because the film had no dialogue, I initially thought sound would be less important. During production, I realised the camera audio had been muted. Instead of reshooting everything, I added sound effects and atmosphere in post-production, which helped build the unsettling tone of the film.

Critique of final outcome

I am happy with the final result. The film stayed within the time limit, the performance worked well, and the sound design helped the story. Some shots could have been cleaner, such as avoiding visible reflections and lighting equipment, but overall it was a successful early short film.

What I learned

I learned how important planning is when working with a crew. Next time I would scout locations earlier, test sound and lighting before shooting, and think more carefully about how each shot will look on screen.
